Proper post-workout nutrition vital to getting ripped

A study that was conducted by researchers at Colorado State University reveals that consuming at least 20 grams of protein after an intense workout may help to build strength and prevent age-related muscle loss.

The team of scientists administered protein drinks to half of the study participants and carbohydrate-rich drinks to the remainder following a 45-minute workout. They found that the subset that consumed protein was better able to maintain and build muscle mass.

"If you want to age gracefully, this study shows that proteins taken after exercise keep your muscles strong and fit. You've got to feed your body with the proper nutrients after a workout," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., editor-in-chief of the FASEB Journal.

Authors of the study recommended protein shakes as a post-lifting snack, but bodybuilders could also choose nutrition bars, supplements for getting ripped or a regular meal with a good portion of lean meat.

Additionally, the researchers said that this study is just one more piece of evidence that exercise and nutrition go hand-in-hand when it comes to fitness, especially for individuals looking to build muscle.
