To jump or not to jump (rope)?

In a recent New York Times article, writer Shivani Vora interviewed Edward Jackowski, owner of Exude Fitness and author of a book titled Jump Into Fitness, and touted the calorie-burning benefits of jumping rope.

“Jumping rope for 10 minutes at 150 turns per minute is equal to 30 minutes of running between six and seven miles per hour," Jackowski said, quoted by the news source.

Vora went on to testify that she dropped significant body fat by attending jump rope classes, and also talked to some fellow gym-goers about how they got ripped by doing the schoolyard activity.

However, Yahoo! Sports writer Nick Bromberg challenged the idea that jumping rope is the ideal form of cardiovascular exercise by talking to Boston strength trainer Eric Cressey.

Cressy said that the limited range of motion and intense repetitions involved in the exercise can set individuals up for injury. He added that in order to jump 150 turns in a minute, a person would need to turn 2.5 jumps every second.

The trainer concluded that jumping rope does have fat-burning benefits, but that it should not be used as an everyday form of aerobic exercise.
