A Ph.D. student at the University of Essex has designed a wireless device that is meant to warn bodybuilders, athletes or just elderly people trying to build muscle when they are overworking themselves, thereby preventing severe fatigue or injury.
The iSense has electrical sensors that can read signals from the muscles that they are becoming too tired. The device then sends a warning signal to the user, prompting them to slow down or take a break.
"It is all about being able to train safely and smartly," said Mohamed Al-Mulla, creator of the iSense.
The researchers said that the device is meant to optimize physical performance and endurance while safeguarding against strain or injury, which can sometimes occur when a person is so focused on getting ripped that they forget about their bodily limits.
Al-Mulla is now looking for investors to turn the device into a commercial product. He is also working on refining iSense to be smaller and have the capability to be connected to smartphones.
The student's research has been published in the journal Sensors.
