It's a well-known fact of aging that muscle building at 40 or 50 isn't quite as easy as it was at age 20. However, researchers at the University of Iowa have reported that eating apples - with their peels intact - may help individuals retain their ripped abs.
The scientists found that a compound found in apple peels called ursolic acid helps to stave off age-related muscle loss and also promotes fat burning.
Moreover, mice who were supplemented with ursolic acid experienced lower levels of blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides.
"Ursolic acid is an interesting natural compound," said lead author Christopher Adams. "It's part of a normal diet as a component of apple peels. They always say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away."
While eating apples alone won't earn anyone bulging biceps or a toned backside, results of this study suggest that the fruit may be a powerful addition to any bodybuilder's diet since the compound may help to preserve the muscles that they worked hard to build.
