What's a kettlebell? A new way to get ripped

In gyms across America, bodybuilders and those just looking to get toned are trying a new workout that involves weighted cast iron balls with handles, known as kettlebells.

What is a relatively new craze to this country actually began hundreds of years ago in Russia as a way to train top athletes and soldiers in the military. Today's exercises with kettlebells combine cardiovascular, flexibility and strength training for a complete workout.

"Because it has a handle, the center of gravity in a kettlebell is six to eight inches outside your grip. This teaches your body how to contend with a constantly changing center of gravity. Kettlebell drills also focus on working many muscle groups at the same time," said fitness professional Anna Dornier.

Since they range in weight from four pounds to upwards of 100 pounds, kettlebells are appropriate for individuals of different fitness levels.

Kettlebell workouts help to improve cardiovascular capacity by strengthening breathing muscles, since many of the exercises are done with weights lifted over the head.
