Free weights may offer an advantage over exercise machine

The allure of mechanical equipment seems to suggest optimal efficiency in the pursuit of building muscles. Yet, dumbbells activate a greater number of muscle fibers because the body is actively in motion.

Dumbbells assist the body builder in developing strength, endurance and power. It requires more work to balance yourself while maintaining proper posture and form. The weaker side of the body performs without assistance from the dominant side. Therefore, each side develops at the same time. This results in achieving greater balance and symmetry between both sides of the body.

“Because machines are adjusting, balancing and supporting your body, the smaller muscles that would normally do these tasks in real life don’t get exercised or strengthened,” said Dean Anderson, behavioral psychology and stress management expert, as quoted by the fitness website sparkpeople.com.

Machines do have some benefits, however, they are easier to use and adjust, which may make them more appealing to the beginner, as stated by Jen Muller, community leader and fitness coach, according to the news source.

Keeping this in mind, choosing dumbbells may provide a better overall usage of muscles working together as a functional system, rather than a mere unit, or facet, of the larger system.
