Shut eye for the rip guy

Much too often in the craze of our daily lives, we discard the importance of sleep. How often have you taken pride in the fact that you can run on a couple of hours of sleep? Stop, look and listen - a new study reports more sleep improves physical performance.

Researchers at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic and Research Laboratory in Stanford, California have found that extending sleep by 110.9 minutes, or just under two hours, results in better productivity. Subjects interviewed for the study indicated that both their physical and mental states had improved. These benefits included faster reaction times, mood improvements and an overall elevation in physical endurance.

"Following multiple weeks of sleep extension, elite athletes demonstrated improvements in specific indicators of basketball athletic performance including higher shooting percentages and faster sprint times," said Cheri D. Mah, MS, lead researcher of the study.

Regardless of whether you plan to shoot baskets or pump iron to build muscle, the results are the same. A couple of hours of extra sleep may heighten your performance significantly.

Maintaining seven to nine hours of sleep nightly could be a shortcut on the road to getting ripped. Make it a priority to incorporate more shut eye within your weight training and pre-workout regimen.
