
Leucine is one of the nine essential amino acids in the human body. It does not occur naturally within the system, but is taken in through diet and supplements. Researchers at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston have shown that leucine is involved in many metabolic reactions.
In the study that they conducted, "It had effects that improved insulin sensitivity, improved the ability to metabolize sugar and fats and overall metabolism," said C. Ronald Kahn, M.D., head of the Joslin Section on Integrative Physiology and Metabolism at the Joslin Diabetes Center, and lead author.
