Building muscle on your employer's time and dime

Many companies are launching fitness programs and similar health initiatives to help their employees get in shape. Some offer blood tests and other medical services while others have fitness training centers, coaches, or even boxing classes.

The LA Times reports that many companies see these programs as a way to cut rising health care costs, and executives believe they may help keep employees healthy and productive.

Many of the health centers offer participants the convenience of an on-site gym, and some provide one-on-one time with a personal trainer or physical therapist. Workers who want to get ripped can ask if their company has similar incentive programs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults should engage in muscle-strengthening activity at least two days each week, working all significant muscle groups, to receive health benefits.

If your employer offers one of these programs, you may be able to schedule workouts more conveniently. When you're planning your strength gain or muscle building workout, remember to give yourself time to rest. Periods of rest allow your muscles to grow, and your hard work to pay off.
