Former football player Alec Thomas free runs for fitness

Alec Thomas is a former wrestler and football player who transitioned to a new sport - running. Thomas recently spoke to Hornell, New York's Evening Tribune about his passion.

Free running involves moving creatively through space, frequently going over or under objects like benches and tables instead of around them. Parkour is the name for the related discipline that focuses more on efficiency of movement between two places, using may of the same moves.

"You use your entire body and need to build muscle," Thomas told the news source, noting a similarity between these activities and his time wrestling.

He and his buddies frequently go for runs in public parks and other urban areas that feature stairs, balconies and interesting obstacles.

One of Thomas' friends, Jacob Wershey, told the news source that he once broke his collarbone while free running. If you want to try free running for fun or as a new way to train, be aware of the risks and proper habits.

An article on Americanparkour.com noted that free running and parkour are generally considered skill and endurance training rather than strength training in terms of their effect on the body. While you may need to build muscle to a certain point in order to make techniques possible, the moves themselves generally aren't an effective strength gain workout.
