Herzlich turns cancer comeback into free agency with Giants

The New York Giants recently drafted Mark Herzlich, a Boston College linebacker who had to fight to get ripped and in shape after he was sidelined for a year by Ewing's sarcoma, an unusual variety of bone cancer.

The Sacramento Bee reports that Herzlich, preparing for his senior season in 2009, was informed by doctors of a 10 inch tumor in his left leg. Now, he has a steel rod in the leg and has fought his way back into shape.

Herzlich continued training his upper body even when treatment and recovery kept him from running, reportedly bench pressing 225 pounds. He's since attended training at IMG Academies in Florida, where strength gain workouts bumped his clean lift from 135 to 300 pounds, according to the news source.

According to Boston College, Herzlich made 65 tackles in the 2010 season, putting him third on his team. His weight training and workout routine have helped him regain muscle and get back into playing shape, enough that he gained the opportunity to sign as a free agent after being passed over in the draft and being told by his doctor, months ago, that he wouldn't play football anymore, according to the Bee.
