Staying fit on vacation isn't as hard as most people think

Summer is a time when many people take vacations from work, and also from working out. Between all day shopping sprees and hotels with all you can eat buffets, it can be difficult to stick to an exercise regimen when trying to have a relaxing time.

Reuters reports that a recent poll of 1,000 Americans found that almost 52 percent exercise on vacation, but 81 percent admitted to overindulging when they are away from home. The news source spoke to fitness expert Matt Hendricks who said that vacationers can make sure their hotel has a gym, or find fitness related tourism activities. He also said that people shouldn't beat themselves up about taking a little break from working out.

"A week's vacation, which is generally what most people take, will make no difference in your cardiovascular fitness," Hendricks said quoted by Reuters. "I don't think it's necessarily such a bad thing to take a week off and let your body recover from all the workouts."

CBS news recommended using a pedometer on vacation to record how many steps an individual is taking while exploring a new area. The news source also said to utilize the hotel pool, even if swimming laps is too much, simply treading water for a half hour can burn 350 calories.
