Staying safe while hitting the gym

Most doctors will say that it's a good idea to get some amount of regular exercise. Even if a person isn't looking to get ripped, working out and staying active can help keep the heart healthy. Before running a marathon or even going for a simple run, it's important to understand how to stay safe while building muscle.

MSNBC recently reported on the dangers of extreme exercise, after the deaths of two New York City triathlon runners. The two athletes had heart attacks during the swimming portion of the competition, suggesting that it's important to understand the health risks of extreme exercise. The news source spoke to physician John Difiori about how to stay safe while competing.

"Far and away the most common cause for deaths in competitive events in people 40 and older is undiagnosed coronary artery disease,” said DiFiori. “If you are planning on participating you should consult with a physician and discuss what your plans are and have a thorough evaluation with that in mind.”

Health.com reported that people need to understand their own limitations before trying to overexert. Exercise is important, and the website mentioned that the benefits greatly outweigh the usually uncommon dangers.
