Anyone trying to build muscle knows that getting ripped can do great things for your physique. Although resistance training is the best course of exercise for bodybuilding, a recent study has highlighted some of the newly discovered positive effects of aerobic exercise.
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have discovered that aerobic exercise may help protect the brain against developing dementia or other cognitive problems later in life. The scientists gave examples of what kind of exercise they were referring to, such as walking, running, raking leaves or shoveling snow.
This furthers past studies that have found that exercise benefits the body and mind, and that staying physically active is important to people of all ages. Many elderly people become inactive as they get older, but this study stresses the importance of at least going for regular walks.
"We concluded that you can make a very compelling argument for exercise as a disease-modifying strategy to prevent dementia and mild cognitive impairment, and for favorably modifying these processes once they have developed," said J. Eric Ahlskog, M.D., Ph.D., a neurologist at Mayo Clinic.
