Aerobic training is best to ward off belly fat

For people who are looking to get ripped, grabbing the dumbbells and doing some resistance training is usually the best way to go. For individuals who are more concerned about eliminating that gut, a new study has shown that aerobic exercise is the better physical activity for combating belly fat.

The study, conducted by researchers at Duke University Medical Center, found that aerobic exercise, such as running or jogging, is more effective at eliminating abdominal fat. This particular kind of fat has been associated with an increased chance of developing heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

Researchers studied participants who either did aerobic exercise, resistance training or both. They found that the aerobic group burned 67 percent more calories than individuals engaging in strength training.

"What really counts is how much exercise you do, how many miles you walk and how many calories you burn. If you choose to work at a lower aerobic intensity, it will simply take longer to burn the same amount of unhealthy fat," said researcher Cris Slentz, Ph.D.

This information is for people looking to lose weight. To build muscle, weight lifting and bodybuilding are still the best methods.
