It's natural for young boys to want to hit the gym at an early age in an effort to build muscle, either for sports or to catch attention from girls. However, there is such a thing as too young when it comes to getting ripped.
The Florida Times-Union reports that boys should be past puberty before they hit the gym, and receive a physical before beginning any weight-lifting regimen.
Additionally, bodybuilding novices, especially kids, should always be supervised when working out to be sure they are using proper form when lifting, and not doing something that could cause injury, the news source reported. Boys may need to be instructed to warm up, cool down and drink plenty of water.
The Mayo Clinic recommends only light weights or resistance training for young people, since excess weight may strain tendons and ligaments.
When done right, strength training can lead to good muscle mass and endurance, protection from injury, better performance in sports, as well as help kids and young adults maintain good cardiovascular health.
