Can getting ripped help improve symptoms of depression?

In a study that was conducted at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, researchers found that exercise was as effective as a second medication for depressed individuals.

Unfortunately, anti-depressants often fail to alleviate all symptoms of the condition. As a result, many patients are put on a second type of drug. In a clinical trial, researchers found that exercise may be powerful enough to replace additional pharmaceuticals.

"Many people would rather use exercise than add another drug, particularly as exercise has a proven positive effect on a person's overall health and well-being," said lead author Madhukar Trivedi.

The researchers found that participants who were on a medication to treat their depression and engaged in an exercise regimen experienced significantly reduced symptoms. In fact, 30 percent reported full remission and 20 percent said their depression was much easier to deal with when exercising.

While pumping iron may not be a secret weapon in eliminating depression, results of this study suggest that hitting the gym may be a great complementary treatment for individuals with the mental disorder.
