Lifting weight and building muscle is the best way to get ripped, but what kind of exercise is the best for improving a person's life expectancy? Recently, researchers in Copenhagen, Denmark, studied a group of cyclists and found that it was the intensity, not the duration of the exercise, that had the greatest effect on mortality. This suggests that working out at a high intensity is the most effective method for reducing an individual's risk of disease.
"This study suggests that a greater part of the daily physical activity in leisure time should be vigorous, based on the individuals own perception of intensity," said researchers. "Our group has already published similar results for all-cause mortality in relation to walking."
The study found that men who cycled at a high intensity rate survived about 5 years longer than men who do not exercise. Those who cycled at a moderate rate only increased their lifespan by an estimated 3 years. Current federal guidelines suggest exercising at medium intensity, but this research suggests that those who are serious about improving their lifespan should work out harder.
