Leafy greens may help pump you up

In addition to being packed with antioxidants, iron and fiber, leafy greens like spinach and kale contain a compound known as nitric oxide. The substance dilates blood vessels, bringing more oxygen to the muscles in order for them to perform at their peak during weight-lifting sessions.

MuscleAndStrength.com reports that the compound is commonly used in supplements to get ripped both for its ability to stimulate blood flow as well as adrenaline production.

Bodybuilders should be sure to only take the recommended dose of a nitric oxide supplement, since too much may lead to fatigue, which will not help build muscle.

Additionally, other fruits and vegetables like apples, broccoli, citrus, berries and grapes contain a phytochemical known as quercetin. An article on Fox News' website reports that the antioxidant may help stave off cancer or heart disease, as well as benefit individuals looking to get ripped.

"According to recent research, [quercetin] may increase endurance for people who are beginning exercise regimens. It may not work as effectively in trained athletes," said dietitian Tanya Zuckerbrot, author of the article.
