People who are trying to get ripped know that it's important to drink enough water during exercise instead of risking dehydration. When building muscle or doing aerobic exercise, drinking water is key to not losing momentum during a work out. Recently, however, a study has found that although water is an important part of staying fit, it is possible to drink too much.
A survey of runners by Loyola University Health System found that nearly half drink too much fluid during races. Although federal guidelines recommend drinking while thirsty, most runners reported drinking on a schedule or as much as they can, which can cause low sodium.
"Many athletes hold unscientific views regarding the benefits of different hydration practices," researchers concluded.
Researchers said that drinking when thirsty is the safest way to combat dehydration and exercise-associated hyponatremia, a condition caused by abnormally low sodium levels in the blood.
