It's no secret that getting ripped and exercising regularly can improve a person's health, but researchers believe it may also help turn back the clock on aging. Recently, scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's K.G. Jebsen Center of Exercise in Medicine found that an active 50-year-old has the stamina of someone 20 years younger, but only if they exercise often and with intensity.
Researchers found that fitness is a better determining factor of overall health than age, and that an active 50-year-old can be more fit than a sedentary 20-year-old. They also found that increasing the intensity of your exercise can limit your chances of developing conditions such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, which can be difficult to control in the elderly.
The scientists added that age should not stop you from continuing to be active
"Even if you were highly active at a young age, you have to keep being active to get the health benefits from it," said researcher Ulrik Wisloff.
These findings should encourage people to all ages to get fit and stay active into their older years.
