The science behind athletic "hot streaks"

RipFire to build muscle

People have a variety of reasons for wanting to get ripped. Some may be just interested in fitness, others may be preparing for a body building competition and others may even be professional athletes.

Have you ever found yourself watching a basketball game and thinking, "Wow, that player is really on a hot streak?" Turns out there may be scientific reasoning behind that. Recent research published in the online journal PLoS ONE analyzed five years worth of NBA free-throws and found that a when an athlete is experiencing streak of positive results, it is likely to continue.

"The research sheds new light on an old question that had two contradicting answers: scientists used to treat it as a misperception of random patterns by human subjects, while typical sports fans were convinced in its real existence," said study authors.

Their findings support the fans' views, suggesting that more research should be conducted into the phenomenon. In the future, scientists may be able to predict through past performance which athletes are more likely to play well.
