Working out may curb migraine pain

RipFire to get ripped

Getting ripped can increase a person's strength and potentially improve their confidence, but it also has other, more surprising benefits. While most people know that exercise can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease while helping people maintain a healthy weight, they may not know that it can also help relieve pain.

Researchers from Sweden have found that exercise may be just as good as medications for controlling migraine pain. Study participants who experienced migraines were asked to work out for 40 minutes a day, three times a week. At the end of three months, patients reported improved quality of life and pain relief equal to that obtained by taking medication.

Commonly used pills used to treat migraines, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), carry a variety of side effects such as stomach ulcers and bleeding. Due to this, scientists have been trying to find an alternative way of controlling these painful headaches.

"Our conclusion is that exercise can act as an alternative to relaxations and topiramate when it comes to preventing migraines, and is particularly appropriate for patients who are unwilling or unable to take preventative medicines," said researcher Emma Varkey.
