Being in a wheelchair doesn't have to keep you from getting ripped. In fact, the chair can actually work with your body to help keep you in shape. For example, researchers from the University of Tennessee have found that using a manual wheelchair on a flat surface for a half hour can burn 120 calories if a person is going at least two miles an hour.
The scientists also found that activities such as mopping or fencing, two activities used in the study, can also burn up to 200 calories, proving that being disabled doesn't mean you can't stay fit.
“It might be simply wheeling their chair along while taking their dog for a walk or playing wheelchair basketball,” said researcher David Bassett. “You can still burn a significant number of calories.”
Other activities mentioned were tennis, baseball, vacuuming and Nordic skiing. All of these are things that a person in a wheelchair can do. Not being able to walk should not keep you from being able to partake in physical activity.
