Whether you're trying to get ripped or just looking to get the regular physical activity that's needed to keep obesity at bay, the winter can sometimes throw a kink in your exercise plan. A study conducted by Northwestern Medicine found that many older Chicago residents are skipping the work outs that are necessary for easing their arthritis pain during the colder months, suggesting that people living in northern regions may be in need of more indoor activities.
"We spend an enormous amount of money on outdoor activities in the summer months for younger and healthier people," said researcher Joe Feinglass. "We need to design more public access opportunities for older people to be more physically active indoors, in the winter."
Boston.com offered some tips for how to properly perform common indoor exercises that can help your build muscle without going out into the winter weather. For example, they suggested doing two minutes of jumping jacks or running up the stairs as a simple warm-up.
Next, the news source suggested trying some squats. Stand with feet shoulder-length apart and, while keeping your head up, slowly move into the sitting position and use your leg muscles to push yourself back up to an upright standing position.
