Young adults who are trying to get ripped may have a barrier in front of them - going to college. That was the finding made by researchers at McMaster University who found that when kids go off to college their regular exercise habits decline steeply.
Researchers interviewed 683 Canadian adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 years old and conducted follow up interviews every two years until the people were 27. They found that the steepest decline in physical activity was made when the young people entered college.
"This is a critical period, as the changes in physical activity during the transition from late adolescence to early adulthood represents the most dramatic declines in physical activity across a person's life," said Matthew Kwan, the principal investigator for the study.
These findings suggest that young people who are interested in staying fit in college should go and find their on-campus gym on their first day, and make it a priority to work in exercise to their class schedule.
