Finally land that three-point shot? Don't try another one too soon.

RipFire to get ripped

Basketball fans who are attempting to get ripped like their favorite player may have spent some time trying to take some three-point shots. When a professional player scores a three-pointer, they may leave many of their fans wondering why they don't do that more often. Recently, researchers at Hebrew University, Jerusalem set out to determine if successfully completing a three-point shot increases a person's chances of landing another.

The researchers examined more than 200,000 attempted shots taken by 291 National Basketball Association (NBA) players. They found that while scoring a three-point shot makes a person more likely to attempt another one, it also increases their chances of missing that follow-up shot.

What does this have to do with the average Joe? According to researchers, the implications are far-reaching.

"This affects everyone's behavior: brokers make investments according to past market performance and commanders make military moves based on the results of past battles. Awareness of the limitations of this kind of learning can help them improve their decision-making processes - as well as those of basketball players," said study authors.
