Marathons found to not cause heart attacks

RipFire to get ripped

There are many reasons that people may want to get ripped. It could be to increase their strength, participate in weight-lifting competitions or even to run a marathon. More people than ever have been running these vigorous races, and the safety of these competitions has been called into question since individuals have been experiencing race-related cardiac arrests.

Recently, an analysis of 10 years of data was published in the New England Journal of Medicine states that most individuals who experienced cardiac arrests after a race had a previously undiagnosed condition, suggesting that the marathons may not be to blame.

"We found that the risk of cardiac arrest for marathon and half-marathon runners is equal to or less than the risk for other athletes – including triathletes, college athletes and casual joggers. This finding provides important reassurance that this is a generally safe and well tolerated activity," said researcher Aaron Baggish, M.D.

These findings also suggest that anyone who is considering running a marathon should get checked out by their doctor before they participate in the race. This way, they will know if they have any condition that may put them at risk while they are running.
