Older people are getting up and running faster than ever

RipFire to get ripped

More and more older people are remaining committed to staying fit and trying to get ripped. Those were the findings made by a study published in AGE review, the official journal of the American Aging Association.

Researchers analyzed the performance of runners in the New York marathon and divided them up into age categories. They found that male marathon runners over 65 and females over 45 have consistently improved their performance over the course of the past 30 years.

"The improved performances can be explained by the increased number of participants in these age categories, as well as the increased interest this age population has in terms of the benefits of physical activity on health and well being" said researcher Romuald Lepers.

While the performance time of people in younger age categories has remain stable in the past few decades, older individuals continue to improve each year. This is good news, as Time magazine reported in 2010 on a study that found that exercise can contribute to healthy aging by helping to prevent conditions such as heart disease, osteoarthritis and dementia.
