Individuals who are committed to their plan to get ripped know that certain workouts can sometimes take a toll on the body. This is what many athletes use vitamin E to improve their performance and help their cells recover from the wear-and-tear associated with exercise. Recently, researchers discovered exactly how this substance benefits the body.
"Without any special effort we consume vitamin E every day and we don't even know what it does in our bodies," said Paul McNeil, M.D., cell biologist and the study's corresponding author.
When you exercise, the mitochondria or "powerhouse" of your cells to burn more oxygen than it normally would. This causes the cell membrane to tear, causing damage to the body. Vitamin E is able to repair this damage, preventing the situation from resulting in any more problems.
Furthermore, McNeil found that tears in skeletal muscle cells would not repair themselves unless vitamin E was introduced.
The National Institutes of Health state that vitamin E can be found in a variety of nutritional supplements and foods such as peanut butter, corn oil and broccoli.
