While people who are trying to get ripped aim to turn fat into muscle, some individuals are just trying to lose weight. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states than more than two-thirds of the country is overweight or obese, so it's important to know which exercise routines work best to help people shed pounds. Recently, the Huffington Post ran an article by fitness expert Ben Greenfield explaining the three categories of high-fat burning exercise and noting which ones are the most effective.
The three categories of workouts are cardio, resistance and a combination of the two. Cardio exercises include running, spinning and dancing, while resistance exercises revolve around training muscles, as yoga and Pilates do.
According to Greenfield, a combination of the two is the best way to lose weight. A 2008 study at the University of California, Santa Cruz found that resistance combined with cardio has significantly better results than doing just one or the other.
The expert also added a caution to those who are trying to get ripped.
"If your goal is not to burn fat, but rather to build strength, you'd be better off doing your resistance training as a separate workout. Similarly, if you're training for endurance, then you should focus on a high-quality cardio workout that isn't interrupted by strength training," said Greenfield, quoted by the news source.
